Since joining CalStar in 2007, Tom has concentrated on opportunities in the finished building products space that meet goals for sustainability, performance, scalability and cost. Prior to joining CalStar, Tom was a senior marketing and business development executive for Alien Technology, where he helped position the company as a leader in the emerging Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) industry. In 2001, he led the spin-out of an RFID startup from the U.S. DOE’s Pacific Northwest National Lab, and drove its subsequent merger and integration with Alien. Before that, Tom was the Vice President of Strategy and Planning at Battelle, the largest private R&D organization in the world. From 1988 to 1994, Tom was a manager and consultant with The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Boston. Early in his career Tom was a bridge design engineer, and was involved in the design and construction of one of the first cable-stayed bridges in the U.S. He holds an M.S. in Management from the MIT Sloan School and a B.Sc. in Structural Engineering and Architecture from Princeton University.
